Éire Óg coast to victory over Newtown in Junior ‘B’ football championship

Éire Óg coasted their way to a comfortable win over Newtown last Thursday to maintain their 100 per cent start to the Junior ‘B’ football championship.

Greystones went into the game in fine fettle after opening their account with a convincing away win over Hollywood in their opener on a score of 4-16 to 1-5, while Newtown enjoyed polar fortunes, losing 2-9 to 1-5 against Newcastle at home.

And it made for another struggle for Newtown last Thursday as they struggled to compete with Greystones where the scoring was concerned.

Éire Óg’s tally of 1-11 was spread across seven different scorers on the day as their variety on the scoreboard caused all sorts of problems for Newtown.

James Delahunt helped himself to a goal to go with his three points, while Darragh Rush got 0-3 himself.

The rest of the five points were spread across Craig Smullen, Seán O’Neill, Cian Hynes, David Prendergast, and Colin O’Shea.

It was more of a struggle for Newtown to make a significant dent on the board, with Seán Odlum their top scorer with 0-2 to go with his 1-2 registered in the defeat to Newcastle.

Both sides will be out again this Thursday as they look to maintain and build momentum, respectively.

For Éire Óg they travel to Newcastle on 7:30 p.m. to face a side who are one-from-one championship game this term.

As for Newtown, they welcome An Tochar, also at 7:30 p.m. Roundwood, too, have one win to their name and will represent a stiff challenge for Newtown as they look for their first win of 2023.
